Dear Food Enthusiasts,
This marks my first of many newsletters to you. Each week, you can expect me in your inbox Fridays at 8 am.I promise to talk about my food.
I promise to talk about my food
I promise to talk about my travels
I promise to talk about how my travels inform my food.
BUT—-first
As a kid, every time there was a big change in my life, food was a comfort.
When I was 13, my parents were splitting up, and the kitchen became my refuge. My safe house. I started simple: making roti & boiled potato curry, as much as a kid could muster. I was copying what I saw chefs make on TV.
I sorely missed community.
When I moved out on my own, that was a big shift. My mates comforted me with the promise of dosa and idli. I couldn’t bear to tell them how much I hated idli. My mom doled them out as sustenance. They promised it was the best in town. I ate so many of those delicious steamed rice cakes that day, I thought I would burst.
What had changed? I had a community.
When I moved to Singapore, I just couldn’t bridge the cultural divide with my neighbors. I thought about my favorite meal (pandi curry, something I discovered in Coorg). The Chinese love their pork. I came bearing a plate of pandi curry, made with pork. And voila! The impenetrable walls came crumbling down.
What changed? I created community.
And food was the connecting dot.
SO, after sitting on this concept for 3 years, I invite you to my inaugural Supper Club: Sampurn.
‘The secret to happiness is good food and great friends’
I promise you good food. And you see to the “becoming great friends!”
